Reconstruction
Recommended Reconstruction Reads
Non-fiction Reconstruction-era books
Power Structures
Reconstruction demonstrates that legal change without economic power is fragile. Civil rights without capital, land, or institutional protection can be reversed.
Forced Labor
Southern states passed Black Codes that criminalized minor offenses — then leased prisoners to plantations and corporations. Mass incarceration, the prison-industrial complex, and the 13th Amendment's exception clause are direct continuations today.
Historiography
After Reconstruction ended, the South rewrote history. Textbooks portrayed enslaved people as content, Reconstruction as corrupt chaos, and white supremacist "Redeemers" as heroes.
